Incomparable Safari Experience

The word 'Mahoora' meaning `the great one’ is a term used by Sri Lanka's original inhabitants, the ancient Veddah tribe to describe a person of great importance including royalty. The Mahoora camping experience was designed to be just that a camping experience blending service fit for royalty with an indigenous touch. Mahoora offers two grades of camping: luxury and standard.

These Safari Camps were managed by the Eco Team, one of the premier wildlife companies in the island, offers camping inside a range of national parks, including Yala, Uda Walalwe, Wasgomuwa, Bundala and Sinharaja Rainforest. The other parks may be available on request, including Minneriya, the Knuckles and Horton Plains.

Luxury and Standard Camps were on offer. The uniqueness of these camps were that they have set those camps just prior to our arrival to the campsite and it was planned to be removed immediately after our departure means their campsites are specially designed for the arriving clients. The Luxury Camps consisted of spacious tents with sleeping and living areas and an ensuite toilet. The whole tent, including the washroom, was equipped with a wall-to-wall carpet. The tent had foldable arm chairs, a coffee table, and two beds with 6-inch mattresses dressed in clean linen, and a flushable toilet with h/w shower, wash basin, and w/c. The Mahoora Standard Camps included smaller tents with a separate communal toilet and shower area.

At night the campsite was lit with candles, lanterns, and campfire and five-course meals or a BBQ were served with a chef in attendance. Unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were served out of a well-stocked bar since we were taking the luxury package. Laptop and digital camera charging facilities were also available. Guests were provided with an umbrella, slippers and a fresh fruit basket on arrival. Security and first aid was ensured at the campsites by the Eco Team staff.

These Safari campsites were set up in excellent locations nearby rivers under clear blue skies in Yala, Uda Walalwe, Wasgomuwa and Sinharaja Rainforest. A qualified naturalist was provided enabling us to gain first-hand knowledge about the environment, the flora and fauna. For game drives, a Land Rover Defender or Land Cruiser Jeeps were used ensuring much fun and adventure with limited aches and pains at the end of a long day.

“Great experience”

I was in Sri Lanka for a couple days in December and wanted to do a one-night safari. It was a great experience, but I would definitely recommend a longer stay. We did a night safari, then stayed at the camp and did a morning safari. Both were very nice. The camp itself is very secluded and located in a beautiful spot on the water. The staff was excellent and prepared a beautiful meal. It's definitely "roughing it" to some extent, but considering you are out on safari, it's very nice.

“Luxury camping, wonderful service - personally tailored”

We stayed at Udawalawa park for 5 nights in December 08. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome thanks to the wonderful Eco Team. From the quality of the campsite and food to the safaris and excursions it was perfect. The campsite team were helpful and friendly, the food varied and beautifully cooked and the setting relaxing. The campsite was set up for approximately eight people but for much of the time only the two of us were there. Eco Team made us feel at home and cared for and were always on hand to give advice, help or just for a chat and a walk along the river bank.
If you choose to stay in a National Park you have to accept the reality of the situation. For us this meant that for safety reasons we could not walk around freely outside of the campsite. The result of this and the good / plentiful food meant that after a few days we were feeling a little sluggish but that is a small price to pay for being so close to the wildlife in the park. I would certainly recommend this site, for the wildlife, the food, the quality of the facilities and for the excellent staff.
